Learning Challenge: Reading Out Loud

Image
For my learning challenge this week, I decided to read the stories that I have published earlier in the class. It is different from reading silently because you find yourself catching mistakes you would make easier than reading it silently which is a big advantage. I also feel like I am in a classroom setting whenever im reading the stories such as my Eddie McNeddie story and Dezus and Friends. I would say that a disadvantage for me was that I sometimes also found myself rambling on and having to go back an re-read my sentences and then I sometimes space out even when reading out loud but I think it is better to read out loud than to silent read because it definitely makes a person write better papers, gets your juices flowing, and makes it sound like you know what you are talking about. Growth Mindset: Failing Superman

Image
For my growth mindset challenge, I decided to watch a video called Failing Superman and I found it to be relatable because I learn certainly different from the way other people learn and that topic was covered in the video. Some people can learn by just reading and Some people can learn by just being taught how to do things or by repetition. Something I didn't know going into the video was the way people's brains are programmed to process learning different curriculum that is taught in school and I am curious to know what other ways I can learn it as well because I am a big believer of accomplishing anything a person puts their minds to. Tech Tip: Canvas Mobile App

For my Tech Tip this week, I decided to check out the Canvas Mobile App. I downloaded it to see how the interface looks like and I was impressed. What impressed me was the fact that I could receive notifications on assignments as soon as they were graded and that you can also email your instructors and classmates from there without having to sign into outlook. I like how you can also let it remind you of upcoming assignments and the fact that you can show grades on each class file. It is definitely more accessible and saves a person a lot of time whenever they want to check their grades.

Week 6 Story: The Bad Batch

Image
There once was a street doctor who was known around town as the Miracle-Man. Miracle-Man was viewed as the fixer-upper of problems whether it would be just giving regular advice to children or providing potions and serums to people who are in need of them to cure their illnesses or to relieve wounds/scars if suffered. There was never a problem that was too big for him because he had all the answers to peoples' problems...except his own. One day while coming back home from a long day at work, Miracle-Man encountered his two young and attractive wives having an argument. His two wives, Jasmine and Chrissy, are very confrontational to the point where they are always bickering and fighting over who is the most gorgeous wife between the two of them and will nearly come to blows about the whole ordeal whenever Miracle-Man says Jasmine is "pretty" and Chrissy is "gorgeous". Jasmine boasts to Chrissy about how she has prettier eyes and luscious locks of golden brown

Reading Notes: The Bald Wife Part B

Image
After reading through all of the stories presented in part b of the unit, I decided to focus most of my attention on the last story called the Bald Wife. The Bald Wife is about a man with two wives (which is kinda similar to the first story i read with the king and seven wives but this is different because in this story he had a younger wife and an elder wife. The younger wife had lots and lots of hair and the elder wife had only a strand of hair. The younger wife then became ridden with lice and asked the elder wife to help her get rid of the lice and she accidentally takes off a portion of the younger wife's hair. this incident then sends them into a journey to a forest where they come across some sort of fountain of youth which then transforms the elder wife from an old hag into a beautiful younger woman which in turn makes the younger wife jealous of her new found beauty. If i were to re-write this story, I would approach it using a different scenario. Maybe still keep the same

Reading Notes: The Boy Whom Seven Mothers Suckled Part A

Image
For my reading this week, I decided to step out of the Life with Buddha stories and check out the Bengali stories in the unit. After reading all nine of the units, I decided to point my focus on the story, The Boy whom Seven Mothers Suckled because the story kind of operates like a love triangle but in a twisted and evil way. The story begins with the King being told about this mango tree where if he plucked each of the seven mangoes and gave them to his seven queens then they will all produce children for him. He then meets a lady who captures his attention and deems her worthy to be a queen but little does he know she is what they call a Rakshasi which pretty much means she is not a human but rather some kind of witch who had charmed the king into making his queens blind and left to starve so they resort to eating their babies. One of the queens on the other hand spared her child and so with the help of the other queens they nurtured and suckled the boy to become stronger than ever.

Famous Last Words: Finding a Balance

Image
For my famous last words, I kinda felt confused about this week's agenda but I ended up getting back on track. Balancing a crazy schedule within school, I find myself trying to keep up with the material along with preparing for post undergrad. For the reading this week, Although I ended up reading the wrong material, I had went back and re-read the right material and found it interesting how the topic of The Life of Buddha was almost movie-like and how he was going through a enlightening journey to become the person that certain individuals would end up looking up too. Mara's Defeat in particular was my favorite story because it highlighted just how powerful Buddha is compared to Mara. Because of this story, I feel like I did my best writing this week with Class President because I love a good story that has a protagonists that is strong but also an antagonist that is clever, charismatic, and opportunistic. Writing that story, i tried to live up to my demands and create the bes

Growth Mindset: Feedback

Image
For my Growth Mindset challenge, I decided to focus on Feedback because i feel like feedback is vital for growth and accepting your rights and wrongs in life. In the article, 3 Reminders for When Challenging Others, it mentions some information that is useful when i always remind myself of becoming a better person. One thing that the article confirmed is you can agree to disagree with others (Bullet Point 3) because you're eventually bound to come into confrontation working with other people so its best to come to a common ground and build. One thing that i didn't know is that you can have a positive attitude doing something that is negative. The example they gave was with work and that no one wants to work at a lousy job but if you maintain a positive outlook then things can change. Something that i would like to try outside of this lesson is to have people send me feedback on my stories that i can use to help me grow as a person and attract better people around me. (photo:

Learning Challenge: Sleep

Image
For my Learning Challenge this week I read the article titled "Why Sleeping May Be More Important than Studying" and I was kind of shocked about the title at first because as a college student, studying is vital and if you don't study then you will fail. There are a lot of students that turn to alternate methods to balance sleeping and studying but in this article i found out some information that i would take into consideration the next time i am deciding whether or not to do an all nighter. The article confirmed that i already knew was that a person needs 6 to 8 hours of sleep so that the brain can be rejuvenated and can experience REM.  One thing i didn't know was that you can learn new languages after experiencing a good amount of sleep because the article mentioned that researchers in NY conducted a study and found that sleep can boost language acquisition skills in young children so in the future i would be curious to try this whenever i have children to see if

Reading Notes: Mara Defeat Part B

Image
After reading the stories that were in the Life of Buddha, I decided to choose the story, Mara's Defeat in Part B of the story. The reason why i chose this story is because it talks about how Mara the evil one was tempting Buddha and trying to defeat him. I feel like that story would serve as the basis of my story for the week because in the other stories i read, they weren't what i wanted to capture in my story. I like how the story operates as like a show in which the villain loses to the favored superhero but in this sense, Mara eventually loses to Buddha and has a hard time accepting defeat but comes to terms with it. In my story, I wrote about how there were two students in a high school setting that were in an election to see who would be class president of their school. I had one character act as if they were Mara and the Other character act as if they were Buddha. Another story i considered using for my story was Siddhartha Becomes Buddha because towards the end of th

Tech Tip: Canvas Dashboard

This week I decided to check out the Tech Tip regarding Canvas Dashboard. I finally figured out how you can edit the site to show your grades on the courses home page without having to go into the course to do so. I also configure the title and picture of your courses. It wasn't that difficult but it was something I did not know and now that i do know about it i will continue to toy with the settings more and more to make it feel more personable for me.

Week 5 Story: Class President

Image
There once was a guy name Sammy who was a suave and outgoing guy. He was the most popular guy in the entire school, all the girls wanted to be with him and all the guys wanted to be like him. Sammy was a straight A student with perfect teeth and hair. He plays Quarterback for the school's football team, is a member of the Key Club, Homecoming King, and a potential student at a prestigious school when he graduates but there is something that is missing in his promising resume and that is becoming Class President. "Becoming Class President would fully establish my superiority in this school and enhance my college application" Sammy said. Elections began last week and the results will be announced today at 1 pm. Sammy was in a tight race with a whiz kid know it all named Elizabeth Smith. She is captain of the debate team, straight A student, member of the math club, and is involved in community service outside of the school. With both determined to become school president

Reading Notes: Maya's Dream Part A

Image
The story i chose to read this week is called Maya's Dream and after reading the book, I felt like it was a mixture of Saint Blaise and a tad bit of a movie that i watched a long time ago that dealt with mystical creatures. Why i compared the two was because towards the end of the story, Maya described in her dream that she was a healer of the world (whether it was healing the sick or helping the blind have sight again) and the characters in the dream resembled some animals that you would see in fantasy movies such as the Chronicles of Narnia. Being a sucker for a story with imagery, I like how the story began with Maya's dream of an elephant with 6 trunks, it seems perfect for a story where i would take the character of Maya and find a way to use the elephant as some sort of messenger with the messages being under each trunk to determine if whether this dream could be a premonition into something bigger or something that could be tragic. I would like to make Maya a main cha

Week 4 Story: Dezus and His Friends

Image
There once was a boy named Dezus who was in line to be King He's known for his generosity and wisdom that is beyond his years He also has a unique group of friends These friends are what trigger a human being's fears. These weren't any ordinary group of friends, these were rather ferocious beasts Human flesh and other animals were often served as the main dish of their feasts. These animals were among the cream of the crop of the food chain and are very rough Only strong-minded and physically gifted creatures like these survive conditions that are tough Lions, Tigers, Bears, Snakes, Cheetahs, Wolves, and Foxes that were not to be ignored Many of the townspeople had greatly feared them because it was only Dezus that the animals adored One day while on a stroll, Dezus noticed something very odd about the loyal and obedient Snake The massive snake, in turn, had warned Dezus about an unfortunate situation that was at stake "I have failed you my dear friend"

Reading Notes: The Ballad of Saint Felix Part B

Image
For my second part of the reading, I chose to continue focusing on the Saints and Animals category of the classical/mythical unit. The story i chose, The Ballad of Saint Felix, is unique because it has a more upbeat tone to the story and its in the form of a nursery rhyme. The setting also takes place sometime between the 18th-20th century and kind of has the same plot to it as the story i read in Part A. The nursery rhyme serves as some sort of feud between soldiers and Christians. If i were to write a story using these characteristics, I would try to change the characters to my choosing. I would try to go in depth with a war between the group i would have to serve as the soldiers and another group which would be the Christians and i would include minor characters to also serve as important parts to the story. One aspect of the story that really interested me was that the Saint served as a protagonist even though he is associated with evil in the eyes of other readers. (photo:  Sai

Reading Notes: Saint Blaise and His Beasts Part A

Image
This week I decided to immerse myself into the story of Saint Blaise and His Beasts. Reading this story took me by surprise because I have never heard this story before so this is my first time learning about it. Saint Blaise generosity is something that struck me as enlightened because usually from slight experience i have noticed that you have to be nice to an extent because people can be evil but that was not the case for him although in the story he is talking to one animal that is per say not known for their loyalty, a wolf. It was amazing how Saint Blaise had control over fierce beasts such as lions, tigers, bears, wolves, and leopards because with those carnivorous animals sitting at the top of the food chain, they are usually known for their appetites of meat whether it would be meat from the other animals below them in the food chain or humans.      The story starts to pick up whenever Blaise instructs the wolf to return the pig to the lonely woman and the wolf in return does

Feedback Thoughts

Image
The two articles i found that were the most interesting to me are the Why rejection hurts so much and the How to get past negativity bias articles. For me, Feedback is more important to me because it lets me know that everyone always will have an opinion on something whether you like it or not. In the past I have gotten feedback on things i have done or the way i have acted towards someone or something and hearing that feedback I would let it dictate my mind because originally when i hear it i think "Nah that's impossible or nah, that can't be true. So and so does not know me" but as i grew older i came to the realization that people will always have opinions and feedback on something and it is something we have to accept. In the Why rejection hurts article, it talked about how the greatest damage rejection usually causes is self inflicted and that made me think about how accurate that statement is because when faced with rejection whether it would be rejection from a

Week 2:Topic Brainstorming

Image
While browsing possible topics for brainstorming i came across very intriguing stories that i could potentially write about for my main project of choice. the 1st topic i chose to write about deals with OU Ghost Stories. What interested me in the topic was a variety of things from OU being the school i attend to some of the buildings that i have been in after hours so i wanted to know more about the background of a building being haunted. I find the backstories of some buildings amusing and what like to learn more about the exact times of when ghosts will appear. I would like to know more about the Walker Tower Woes and Roller Skatin Robby as they are the most intriguing stories to catch my eye and try to come up with my own story of a building that is not what it seems when no one is around. (photo:  OU after dark )   Story Source:  Roller Skatin Robby ,  Walker Tower For my 2nd choice of topic I decided to look at the topic of Tricksters because that category in particular als

Week 3 Story: Unlikely Heroine

Image
"Elizabeth, my dear daughter you will one day become a great wife to a fearless and powerful man" proclaimed a gravely ill woman on her deathbed speaking to a young girl. The gravely ill woman is Elizabeth's mother and the young girl is Elizabeth. "Mommy please don't leave me i am just but a young girl" cried out Elizabeth as she saw her mom draw her final breath. Young Elizabeth is now an orphan. Her father passed away from a terrible car accident 5 years earlier and now her mother is gone. She is left to care for herself with no next of kin being near her to take her in. She endured very hot summers and very harsh winters, scrounging around for food and shelter. She hopped from shelter to shelter during the winters to keep herself warm and while in those shelters after crying and grieving, she began to wonder what her mother meant when she said "You will one day become a great wife to a fearless and powerful man".  (photo:  Shrine of Esther

Reading Notes: Esther 1 Part B

Image
(photo:  Esther )     For my Part B I chose to review the story of Esther which I have heard before in a church that i have visited back in the day. In the story, Esther is an orphan that is taken in by Mordecai and then later brought onto the King in order to present her as the next queen. I found it interesting how the story then shifts dynamic in the other parts but this part of the tale is what has alot of things going on at once. From Mordecai telling her to conceal her real identity to Haman attempting to destroy the Jewish people, I like how Esther is the unlikely hero for the Jewish people even though shes unsure of how she will settle into the role of queen. It seems like this could be like a movie plot because you have this underlying theme of jealousy mixed in with betrayal and romance. What also won me over is how Mordecai even though is her uncle treats her more like a daughter and is with her every step of the way. His wisdom is what keeps Esther safe and it was indee

Reading Notes: The Gospel of Mark Part A

Image
For my story this week, I chose to view the story of Jesus the Healer in the Gospel of Mark. I wanted to do a story of which i was somewhat familiar with since this story is in the Bible and the story i chose behind it uplifts people and assures them that everything will be alright in life even when things are not looking too good. In the story, Jesus heals a man that was possessed by demons and once people began to realize the power of Jesus they began to bring others who are near death's door or stricken with illness or injury to Jesus for him to lay hands on them. It was an interesting read because it reminds me of what i learned back in Sunday School in church. The part i enjoyed the most about the story was in the middle where i read about a woman who had blood issues for 12 years and had been to every physician around town who could do absolutely nothing for her so she came to Jesus and he healed her instantly.                The story had began to make me think about some e
