Week 5 Story: Class President
There once was a guy name Sammy who was a suave and outgoing guy. He was the most popular guy in the entire school, all the girls wanted to be with him and all the guys wanted to be like him. Sammy was a straight A student with perfect teeth and hair. He plays Quarterback for the school's football team, is a member of the Key Club, Homecoming King, and a potential student at a prestigious school when he graduates but there is something that is missing in his promising resume and that is becoming Class President. "Becoming Class President would fully establish my superiority in this school and enhance my college application" Sammy said.
"My opponent believes that you can have students leave school after lunch which is preposterous" Elizabeth proclaimed.
Elections began last week and the results will be announced today at 1 pm. Sammy was in a tight race with a whiz kid know it all named Elizabeth Smith. She is captain of the debate team, straight A student, member of the math club, and is involved in community service outside of the school. With both determined to become school president, they would go to great lengths to sway the school vote.
"If i am president, i promise there will be off campus lunch and earlier releases" protested Sammy. "If i am president, i will make sure school dances will host live musicians" proclaimed Elizabeth. The races were neck and neck, and students were trying to figure out who to vote for. 1 pm rolls around and the votes were deadlocked among the students. The deciding factor would be left up to a teacher since rules were that if a deadlock were to be reach then a teacher must decide who will become the president. Startled, Sammy begins to become visibly upset and questions why the teacher would decide the final vote. The teacher selected ended up being an old mentor of Sammy's and he begins to grin.
Elizabeth and Sammy both delivered their speeches and were remorseful of their actions but only to an extent. Elizabeth still stuck to her views and changes she wants to enforce in the school while Sammy went on to still maintain his promises but also expressed "regret" about making all these big promises to students without taking into consideration the budget for the school district. The speeches were than followed up with a debate between the two candidates.

"I have checked regulations regarding time and nowhere did i see a violation against early release. Students can qualify for early release following a certain GPA requirement and number of completed hours" said Sammy with his rebuttal. The back and forth was constant until the timer expired. Both candidates exhausted from the constant bickering and the crowd of students awaiting to see who would become their next president.
After the teacher heard their pleas and casted his vote, the Principal came up to the podium to determine who the next Class President would be. This was it, it was finally time to see which student could enhance their portfolio and strengthening their chances into getting into their dream school.
"This race was very close in the first time in school history.. I would like to thank all the students who voted and remember your vote counts" the Principal said.
"Now the moment you all have waited for ...and your class president is......" the Principal says in a loud manner and the crowd on the edge of their seats.
"Elizabeth Smith!"the Principal declared. The crowd then began to display mixed reactions as a good amount of them expected Sammy to win. Sammy, stunned as ever and red with anger, fell to the floor in defeat. "All that i have ever worked for up to this, down the drain" he said. Elizabeth then made her way to Sammy's podium and congratulated Sammy for a battle well fought. After Sammy collected himself, he then congratulated her for winning the election along with at least hinting at a possible role as a VP but Elizabeth laughs and says "Hmm we will see about that...ill have to ask my VP whom i hand picked". Sammy then sees her handpicked VP stand next to her and the two walk to the front of the stage and leave Sammy who looks defeated to come to the realization that there is finally a new class president.

Author's Note: I had put my own spin on Mara's Defeat and made Sammy become Mara in the story. I made Sammy and Elizabeth equal in terms of credentials but the difference is mainly the character's emotions. They are both trying to convince the people to vote for them based on their principles. I made Sammy look like he was gonna use his charm to sway the crowd and it worked because they were neck and neck but i then made the teacher act as some sort of weapon used to defeat the evil candidate. I made the story operate at a fast pace immediately going from election week to election day instead of listing the activities they did to get votes. In the end, I made Sammy lose because seeing as how he is portrayed as the popular all-american kid, he can easily attain votes and is seen as Superior in the High School hierarchy so when he realizes there is a tie, he starts to question his power in the school by continuing to make promises and then he finally realizes that he does not have as much power as he thinks he does when he loses the election due to a teacher. I didn't name the other minor characters just so that i can only focus on Elizabeth and Sammy.
Hey Charlton!
ReplyDeleteThis was a great story to read. It was a fun and easy read. I liked how you wrote the dialogue between the two characters. I also liked how there was a bit of a mystery throughout the story! I honestly thought Sammy was going to win. I enjoyed your picture (love Boy Meets World). This was a well-written story, nice job!
I really like the way that you started this story. By listing all of Sammy’s activities and personality traits, it allows the reader to picture him from the very start of the story. This is nice to have in your mind as the story goes on. I can feel Sammy’s struggle. I think that everyone has been in the same position as Sammy. Really trying to achieve something and it going the other way is a heartbreaking feeling. I enjoyed reading this story!
ReplyDeleteLet's Pretend: I am Sammy. I see that I am just as qualified as Elizabeth and that I have more popular points to make. I think it is unfair that I lost the election as what kind of rule of law dictates that the students do not have the final say in their own president? Also, how do I not win this? I am promising the students off campus lunch versus live musicians. I would like to settle this by making a few points, the first being how the students that should have voted did not and why we should recount the votes. Many students did not believe that they needed to vote due to their confidence in my campaign therefore we should recount the votes. I am popular. I am the QB of the football team. I am responsible and caring. I am a member of the Key Club and a straight A student. I do not believe there is a world where Elizabeth could beat me in this popularity contest.
ReplyDeleteHi Charlton! I'm gonna try the "Let's Pretend" feedback. I am the teacher voting to break the tie....Overall the two students running for class president are great well-rounded kids! I actually went to school with their parents! What a time it was! But that's besides the point ha-ha. I just want to know if my decision was correct? When I did have Sammy as a student, he was a great student and really put his mind to things he wanted. Had I ever taught Elizabeth? If so, what were my personal thoughts on her? Cause I overheard what she said to Sammy and that really didn't sound like a class president. She was really kind of smug towards Sammy when he actually fought through his apparent anguish to congratulate her. I think I would've liked to know them more personally to really see who deserves the title of class president.
