Reading Notes: Celtic Tales Part B

For my B section of reading notes, I chose to read about a few stories that have caught my interest. In the tale, The Tale of Ivan by Joseph Jacobs, a man and a woman live in the town of Llanlavan and are impoverished. Ivan begins to go find work so that they can live comfortably and comes across an elder who alerts him that he has a piece of advice instead of wages to give to Ivan. The master in the story acts as a prophet because he constantly tells Ivan advice that Ivan should greatly consider. A part in the story I liked is when the master told Ivan about the cake his wife made and instructed him to cut the cake when he is the most joyous and not a minute sooner. After he leaves the elder's house, Ivan then encounters a series of mishaps and events that create chaos throughout the day and when the hectic events finally settle, Ivan returns home to his wife as happy as he can be and then cuts open the cake to find the wages he had been asking for.

Notes for Possible Story:

  • Plot- Ivan lives an impoverished life which leads him to ask the elder he works under for a raise in wages. A story could center on a poor man asking for an increase in the check for his birthday, the boss gives him a notebook and says to lose it or open it until he returns home baring a piece of fruit within a certain hour of the day, blows a tire going home and tries to figure out a way to get home. Eventually gets home but I am still deciding how the story should end.
  • Setting-Present Day
  • Characters-Ivan, Elder, Wife
  • Ending-Possible cliffhanger or the character might enjoy the benefits of the fruit.
(Ivan)

In another story, Andrew Coffey, the plot was very cheerful and reminded me of a movie.

Notes:

  • Promising Characters
  • Complex but Clever plot
  • The story could feature some characters that pertain to this tale. I could see myself carrying on from where the story left off which is him awakening to find a horse grazing his side.
