Week 9 Story: Peasant Marries Princess

Governor Bob of McCastland had a daughter named Amelia who was the definition of beauty and brains. She was on track to graduate medical school and work in the field after school which was typically expected. Back in her days as an undergrad student, Amelia was active in on-campus organizations and the Ms. McCastland pageant. She won the competition and by a landslide, to not that many folks' surprise. It was that day that a janitor named Sam decided that he will do whatever it takes for Amelia to be his wife.

Sam went to the same university as Amelia but had to withdraw from the school due to financial reasons. Sam had been trying to get back into the school ever since he withdrew because he shared the same ambitions as Amelia but the obstacles that he faced were standing between him and her. Before Sam withdrew from the university, he was enrolled in a class with Amelia and her then boyfriend. They were in a group together for a semester-long project and that happened to be the first time he laid eyes on her. When the group project finished, Amelia's boyfriend proposed to her in front of the entire class much to everyone's chagrin. She accepted the proposal leaving Sam to accept the fact that his life is over and to add insult to injury, he found out he would have to leave school since he was behind on tuition payments a few hours after.

Eventually, the engagement was called off due to their differences and since then her parents, mainly Governor Bob, have been pressuring her to get married since she is about to embark on her career. Governor Bob wanted Amelia to get back with her ex-fiance since he feels they are right for each other and they are both come from wealthy backgrounds. Governor Bob promised that he would have potential suitors attend her graduation dinner to see if she would end up hitting it off with the right guy. Amelia told him that she would love to meet an ordinary guy who wants to be with her for her.

It was finally time for the dinner and Amelia's family had invited just about anybody who is everybody to come celebrate Amelia's achievement. The hall was set up to where there was a section for the suitors of Amelia on one side and their families and other friends of Amelia's family on the other. A group of young men then entered in the building in fancy suits and greeted the Governor before taking a seat at the table. Sam then arrived at the party wearing whatever suit he could find but filled with hope that he would be leaving with Amelia as his wife. Governor Bob welcomed everyone to the event and introduced Amelia and her mother to the entire attendees. After the dinner and performance by the musical guest, Governor Bob then called upon the men that were there to win Amelia's heart to come on the stage as he requested. He then told all of the guests that one of these men will win Amelia's heart. As each and every guy introduced themselves, Sam was watching helplessly as he seen every guy mention how they are either graduating law school, medical school, or already working for a Fortune 500 company. Governor Bob then informed them that they must guess 3 of the toughest questions related to his daughter to enable them to marry her.

The questions that were presented were based on Amelia's birthday, birth location, and birthstone. One by one, each man kept saying random dates and cities that they can think of. Governor Bob kept dismissing them with a disappointed look on his face and after the last guy answered the final question wrong, Bob seemed to have had enough. he began to worry that there is no one amongst these men that has the right credentials to marry his daughter even though they are all wealthy and are well off. He then questions the audience to see where he can find the right guy. Even though he was hesitant at first, Sam eventually grew a spine and fessed up to being the right man to marry Amelia. Governor Bob in confusion questions who Sam happens to be and Amelia arises in shock to see what was about to transpire. Sam makes his way to the front and describes who he is and what he does for a living. Disgusted, Governor Bob calls for security to come and get Sam out of the building while stating that a person of Sam's ilk can never marry a person like Amelia. Security came to carry Sam out of the building and while doing so Sam begins to recite the correct answers to the questions that were presented.

Stunned, Amelia demands the security guards to put Sam down and begins to head towards Sam's direction. Sam then begins to profess his love for Amelia in front of everyone and proposes to her in front of everyone who is rooting for Sam. Amelia was brought to tears of joy and realized that Sam was the guy who she's been asking for this whole time and happily agrees to marry him. Everyone in the building begins to cheer and embrace the two as they begin to marry. Governor Bob declares that he will not let his daughter marry a janitor and will see to it that their marriage never happens.

Author's Note:  This story is based on the story, Spider Marries Monkey's Daughter. I made the character Sam the Spider, Governor Bob the Monkey, and Amelia the Monkey's Daughter. I maintained the same plot which is Monkey not wanting Spider to marry his daughter because he feels that Spider is beneath them. I changed a lot of elements in the story starting with not having any dialogue and just narrating the whole story. I then changed the setting of the story to a fictional town and I set the time period to be the present day but added in some unorthodox methods that could be fitting in another century. I changed the ending that resulted in the spider being killed to a cliffhanger because I wanted to make the Governor reflect how evil the Monkey was in the story. Instead of killing Sam, He promises that he will do everything in his power to make sure that his daughter does not marry a poor man.

  1. Hello, I thought this was an interesting, although tragic, story. I liked how you changed the characters to humans. I think this story is not far off with experiences some people have to face in their search for love with the pressure of their parents hovering over them.

I also enjoyed how you chose to end the story with a cliffhanger, instead of killing off Sam. I think this makes the story more heartbreaking because the two love-birds have to live their life knowing that their one true love is still out there, but untouchable. Your cliffhanger also opens up a door for you to create another story that follows this one, e.g., the two spend their lives escaping from Governor Bob's attempts to kill same, running off together, or on an endless adventure trying to find each other because the one of them was banished for eternity!

    Well done!

  2. Hi Charlton! First of all, your picture of the Bachelorette is hilarious and I think it fits perfectly with the story. I wish there was a little more dialogue in this story, and instead of just telling us how Amelia feels she could actually say it to Governor Bob or to Sam. I think adding a conversation or two would make the whole story more passionate and emotional.
